Short-term stress can increase the expression of immunoprotective (e.g. wound healing, anti-infectious, anti-tumor) or immuno-pathological (pro-inflammatory, autoimmune) responses. From the other side, chronic stress can suppress protective immune responses and/or worsen pathological immune responses.
Thus, stress has an adaptive function. It has a profound influence on the immune system through different neuroendocrine networks. Stress can have an effect on inflammatory autoimmune diseases, both in predisposing towards onset of disease or in worsening of existing symptoms.
