Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar level) is common by autoimmune disorders and Hashimoto’s in particular.
The reliable detection of low blood sugar has been a longstanding concern.
Dogs can detect hypoglycemia. The hypothesis is that they can do that by detecting the scent of hypoglycemia. Besides olfactory cues, dogs may respond to subtle changes in their owners’ moods (as sugar levels drop people often are becoming more irritable) or visual signals related to the owners’ behavior (e.g. trembling, becoming disorientated).
