Humans are social animals. Social connection is essential for our happiness and health.

Living in groups is essential for the survival and re-productive success of social species. Social isolation, loneliness are powerful chronic emotional stressors. They are weakening the neuroendocrine and the immune systems and disrupting the neuro-immuno-endocrine communication and as a consequence pathologies can occur. Research shows that social isolation impairs several immunological functions which may cause the increased vulnerability to infections and inflammatory diseases such as neuro inflammation, tumoral processes, or cardiovascular pathologies by lonely individuals. Though isolated subjects responding with high anxiety levels to the psychological stress besides the immunological impairment show a greater oxidative and inflammatory stress. Thus, the negative effect of isolation depends on our respond to it. When we respond anxiously to isolation, this increases it’s negative effect on our health.
